FG, Gombe to distribute fertilizer to farmers.

Farmers in Gombe State are to receive 35,000 tonnes of fertiliser from the state and Federal Governments for the 2014 farming season, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Dahiru Buba-Biri, has said.

The commissioner told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Gombe that the state government would distribute 20,000 tonnes.

He said that the remaining 15,000 metric tonnes of the commodity would be jointly purchased by the state and federal governments under the Growth Enhancement Scheme.

According to him, the distribution of the 20,000 metric tonnes purchased by the government scheduled for last week was shifted due to the death of the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar.

The commissioner said the commodity would be sold to farmers at 25 per cent subsidy.

He recalled that 20,000 and 14,000 metric tonnes were sold to farmers in 2013 by the state and federal government respectively.

Buba-Biri also said that the government had commenced the distribution of 70 tonnes of improved maize seeds and 2,218 ox-ploughs at subsidised rate, as well as offered N50, 000 financial support to some of the farmers.
The commissioner said that approval had been granted for the purchase of chemicals which would be distributed later in the season.
