The Minister of Environment, Mrs Laurentia Mallam, on Wednesday inaugurated an ecological model village at Tofa village in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the model village is an integrated project comprising of a solar-powered viewing centre, solar-powered cooking stoves and water treatment facility.

“We wish to hand over this project to the state Ministry of Environment through the Commissioner on behalf of Mr President for onward transmission to the community.

“The community will now liaise with you and you will monitor how well they use it and report back to us,” she said.

Mallam, however, urged members of the community to see the facilities as their own, and do their best to maintain it.

“This viewing centre will be used for skills acquisition and other activities. “We have distributed 500 clean cooking stoves to the women to prevent them from using fire wood,” she said.

Mallam said that the clean cooking stoves would ensure the success of the various tree-planting campaigns nationwide and curb deforestation.

Some of the beneficiaries told NAN that the stoves had reduced the stress of frequent visits to the forest for fuel wood.

NAN reports that the minister was on a visit to Zamfara to create awareness on the Great Green Wall Project and other environmental issues in the state. (Source - Punch)
