‘Made in Nigeria’ boost as Shoprite launches initiative. cc @DrJoeAbah
The launch event kicked off in February at Shoprite’s Ikeja Mall supermarket and was attended by local businesses currently supplying into Shoprite’s countrywide store network as well as those businesses looking to get more exposure for their products.
Over the years, the outfit has grown its local offering, with over 80 per cent of the goods sold in its supermarkets now locally sourced. The push towards a majority local supply throughout its Nigeria operation comes out of a need to meet the demand from its growing customer base.
With local suppliers being subjected to the same stringent quality standards and demanding targets expected of its international suppliers, Shoprite’s ‘Made in Nigeria’ initiative is very timely, as it seeks to provide additional support to local manufacturers to ensure consistency of supply.
Seyi Abolaji, co-founder and CEO of Wilsons Juice Company, a supplier to Shoprite, encouraged entrepreneurs and owners of small enterprises to take advantage of this platform to grow their businesses. “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase products made in Nigeria on a national scale through Africa’s leading retail chain and an opportunity to get the support your business needs to successfully bring your product to market.”
For Ada Osakwe, founder of Nuli Juice, producers of “Zobo” juice, working with the company has been a great learning experience. “They helped us to get our product packaging right so that our juices not only look great on shelf, but are the best quality for our customers.”
The regional manager of the company, Mr Olufemi Oke, who spoke on behalf of the management team echoed, “The ‘Made in Nigeria’ initiative is the boost that local suppliers need and will contribute towards growing the economy. Entrepreneurs and small businesses are encouraged to partner with us in our bid to bring proudly Nigerian products to households across the country.”
Producers, manufactures and SMEs are advised to connect with the company on Facebook and Twitter for more details.
