The Federal Government is set to audit all federal lands and landed property in the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, even as it fashions out a framework for the creation of a Land Bank.
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, said this at the inauguration of three ministerial committees to ensure a successful take-off of the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company, NMRC. It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had, on January 16, 2014, launched NMRC to enhance home accessibility and ownership through the new products and services offered by the company to increase mortgage penetration in the country.
Eyakenyi said the inauguration of the committees is to ensure proper utilisation of Federal Government’s lands and landed property, with a view to getting maximum value from prime property and freeing under-utilised land for new housing projects.
“We need to ensure proper utilisation of Federal Government’s land and landed property with a view of getting maximum value from prime property and freeing under-utilised lands for new housing projects. We are looking into houses that have been constructed across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory under the present administration and it would include houses built by the federal and state governments and the private developers,” she stated.
The three committees are: Ministerial Committee on Presidential Initiative on the Delivery of 10,000 Housing Units under the NMRC Housing Finance Scheme; Ministerial Committee on Verification and Auditing of FG Lands and Landed Property in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT; and Ministerial Committee on National Housing Survey.
Specifically, Eyakenyi said the Committee on Verification and Auditing of FG Lands and Landed Property is to undertake a comprehensive inventory and auditing of federal government Lands and Landed Property in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. It will also review the current use of federal government lands and landed property with a view to putting under-utilised property to full use and determining the suitability of under-utilised lands for new housing projects as well as propose framework for the creation of a Land Bank.
The minister said the Committee on Presidential Initiative for the delivery of 10,000 housing Units is to ensure timely delivery of 10,000 housing units with clear action plans, set targets and timelines, propose sound eligibility criteria for the participation of developers and builders in the construction of the proposed 10,000 housing units as well as create robust synergy and complementarities between respective offices of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy/ Minister of Finance and the Minister of Lands Housing and Urban Development in order to ensure effective implementation of the Presidential Initiative. It will also gather and collate relevant data including land availability, topographical maps.
